Justice for Immigrant Women
Artist’s note: This mural was made with the assistance of other assistants and the design was selected by the local community. On a personal note… though this mural is meant for all immigrants. My mother’s story has definitely inspired the design.
As part of the groundbreaking Horizontes project, which engaged artists and residents in Wichita’s NorthEnd and Northeast neighborhoods, this mural addresses the struggle of immigrant families at a time of increased I.C.E. detentions, deportations and family separations. Completing this bridge’s new decorations are murals by Kamela Eaton and Ellamonique Baccus.
Highlighting the humanity of struggle for justice posters: the image on the poster is completed by the body holding it. A big part of PoC struggles, as we fight through: the judicial system, work, marches, etc. We cannot neglect that we are simultaneously fighting to be seen as humans integral to society at large. Unlike our white counterparts who are able to fight for justice without having to show proof, of their humanity.

About the Mural Location
“Horizontes is about making transformational neighborhood change and creating lasting bridges between Black and Brown North Wichita residents. This train bridge serves as an actual connector of both the Northeast and Northend neighborhoods, and our goal is to elevate this community literal bridge into the realm of ancient wisdom and folklore, using mural painting as a media to illustrate what divides and ultimately, unites us.”—Link

About HORIZONTERS Project
"Horizontes, a 2017 Knight Cities Challenge winner, is an artist-driven, community engagement art project that aims to connect two underrepresented neighborhoods in north Wichita, the predominantly Latino NorthEnd and historically African American Northeast neighborhoods, which are both physically and psychologically separated by large grain elevators along the industrial corridor.
Through a door-to-door community engagement campaign and the creation of large-scale murals, we hope to catalyze a participatory vision for the future of north Wichita.
Horizontes is one of 33 Knight Cities Challenge 2017 Winners, and was selected from more than 4,500 applicants. The Knight Cities Challenge seeks new ideas from innovators who will take hold of the future of our cities.
Wichita is seen as a diverse city bubbling with opportunity and fresh community development initiatives. This renewed economic activity raises the question of who has access to these renewed opportunities and resources. The North and Northeast neighborhoods are living examples of a historic and systemic lack of access to opportunity and resources that could result in lasting community development.”— Link
